Singing competition
200 Years Strauss MUT-Special Edition

For the 200th birthday of Johann Strauss (Son), the Johann Strauss Festival Year 2025 in Vienna, in cooperation with the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich, is already organizing a MUT Special Edition on Viennese Operetta in the spring of 2024. On the stages, operettas by Johann Strauss, foremost among them ‘Die Fledermaus’, are staples in the repertoire. The genre is demanding: the performers must be able to sing, dance, act, and speak to fully bring out the spirit of those pieces.

The aim of our special competition is to discover and promote artistic personalities for this important stage genre. The competition is open to participants across Europe and is aimed at both classically trained singers and musical theatre actors with an affinity for the operetta genre.

The Jury

For the jury of the preliminary rounds and the final, outstanding personalities have been recruited. They represent the local and international music theater scene and come from institutions such as the Volksoper Wien, the Aalto Theater Essen, the MusikTheater an der Wien, the Theater Bonn, the Salzburger Landestheater, the Staatsoper Stuttgart, the Lehár Festival Bad Ischl, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and others. The jury is chaired by Roland Geyer (Director of the Johann Strauss Festival Year 2025 Vienna) and Josef E. Köpplinger (Director of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz).

How to apply ...

1. Record two separate videos of your arias (compulsory pieces) and additionally create a short introduction video of yourself, including the presentation of your selected monologue.

2. Upload your videos to an external video platform and insert the three generated links into our online-registration form

What's next?

Those who have qualified for the semifinals will be informed at the latest two weeks before the semifinal.

Those who have qualified for the semifinal should prepare five pieces for it: three pieces from the list on our website, along with two optional pieces, which can also come from the list but can also be from other composers from the era of classical Viennese operetta (e.g., Carl Millöcker, Franz von Suppé, Carl Zeller, or Carl Michael Ziehrer).

The jury will then select 2 audition arias from them during the semifinal.

In addition, there is a round for acting skills in the semifinal: a dialogue is to be prepared, and we will provide this directly to the semifinalists via email for download.
