15. Aug - 16. Aug
Programme |  Opening OCT.opus 25

Description

Strauss' biography is closely connected to Karlsplatz. He was once expelled from the Polytechnic at Karlsplatz for singing in class, and in the Karlskirche, he married his second wife. Now, 200 years later, together with a multitude of local and international artists, he dances and conducts the OCT.opus 25.

Programme

Tanz der Sirenen
Eva Reiter | God’s Entertainment | Black Page Orchestra

A waltz entitled Sirens was first performed in Vienna in 1855. The musical form of this work gives no indication as to whether Johann Strauss was inspired by the technical warning device or the figure of the sirens from Greek mythology.

A translation of this theme into our present-day environment includes both and also embodies the perspective of a monstrous octopus. Everything turns around and inside him when the sirens begin to sound. Then his arms and tentacles also begin to tell of the play of melodies, of temptation to ruin, of the sound of what is to come.

Freut euch des Lebens
Matthias Kranebitter | Black Page Orchestra

Octopuses seem to have a particular preference for a frequency of 600 hertz, which corresponds to the musical d‘‘. The waltz Freut Euch des Lebens op. 340 by Johann Strauss, which was explicitly composed for the opening ball of the Vienna Musikverein in 1870 for their new venue on Karlsplatz, seems particularly suitable for this.

Taking into account the anatomical requirements of octopuses and the key of B flat major chosen by Johann Strauss, with a statistical accumulation of notes in the frequency range around 600 hertz, this waltz was re-composed and premiered for octopuses and other cephalopods.

Wir drehen uns im Kreis

Maja Osojnik | God’s Entertainment | Black Page Orchestra

The composer has devoted herself to the method of musical recycling already practiced by Strauss. She composes a recycled waltz from several waltz melodies by cutting away, halving, rolling, printing, repeating and expanding. Using the linocut - a technique from the same period as Strauss‘ waltz - she brings out the characteristic features of the three-quarter classic by copying it many times until
the printing technique and musical notation shift into one another and a completely new piece emerges from it.

Under the motto Freut euch der Kunst oder Vom Geheimnis des melodischen Recyclings (Rejoice in art or the secret of melodic recycling), a blueprint appears as a template for reproduction - ready to be rolled anew.

Irrlicht
Mirela Ivičević | Black Page Orchestra

In search of sonic non-conformity, IRRLICHT takes a waltz apart layer by layer until it loses its form and opens up new spaces of meaning. What initially sounds familiar turns into the unpredictable: a body of sound in flux, full of breaks, frictions
and surprising twists and turns.
Revealing a cosmos of cross-connections and associations, so that the whole is reflected in the detail and the whole is reflected in the fragment. The result is a polyphonic interplay between order and chaos, between musical precision, performative
energy and radical openness: all waltzing will-o‘-the-wisps - unite!

Die Rosen aus dem Süden
Lukas König | God’s Entertainment | Black Page Orchestra

An old Persian proverb says: „The book is like the rose, for it opens the reader‘s heart when it is looked at petal by petal. In this sense: rose by rose, petal by petal, note by note, artfully brought together into a new bouquet.

In the process, what once sounded so romantically delightful from the salons of the 19th century is defoliated like an old rose, placed in fresh water, revitalized and bound anew. A contemporary collage full of tension grows between operetta splendor, visual performance and orchestral precision: The Roses from the South as the soundtrack of a time in which no beat is innocent. A Strauss that stings.
