
Born in León (Spain), Luis Zorita studied in Oviedo with Alexander Fedortchenko, in Chicago with Kim Scholes and Christopher Constanza, and later with Rudolf Leopold in Graz—all degrees completed with distinction. He has won first prizes at solo competitions in Spain, the USA, Japan, and Austria.
He served as principal cellist of the Orquestra de Cadaqués and as guest principal cellist with the Tonkünstler Orchestra of Lower Austria (deputizing for Christoph Stradner) and the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. He is a guest musician with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the Super World Orchestra, and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. He is also a member of the Merlin Ensemble Vienna and guest principal cellist of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and Camerata Salzburg. He has performed at and been invited to renowned festivals throughout Europe, South America, Asia, and the United States.
As a soloist, Luis Zorita has appeared with numerous major orchestras in all of Spain’s major cultural centers, as well as in Chicago, London, Ljubljana, Zagreb, Graz, and Vienna—performing concertos by Haydn, Elgar, Saint-Saëns, Lalo, and Rodrigo, as well as Brahms' Double Concerto and Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Neville Marriner. His performances have been broadcast live by ORF, Swedish Radio, RAI (Italy), WFM Chicago, and Spanish National Radio.
He has made recordings of sonatas and concertos, both in the studio and from live performances. In autumn 2012, he recorded Philippe Hersant’s Double Cello Quintet with the Hugo Wolf Quartet.
Luis Zorita gives masterclasses in San Sebastián, for the Joven Orquesta de Murcia, the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España, the Joven Orquesta de Castellón, and regularly teaches the South Tyrolean Youth Orchestra.
His upcoming projects include masterclasses and solo concerts in Ukraine, Denmark, Germany, and the USA, as well as chamber music performances with the Kreisler String Trio, which he founded in 2007. He will also appear at the Klangfrühling Festival in Schlaining with the Kutrowatz brothers, in Japan, and at the Styriarte Festival. As a soloist, he will perform Haydn’s D major Cello Concerto and Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Pannonian Orchestra at the Stefaniensaal in Graz in 2013, and Elgar and other works in Austria, Denmark, and Spain in 2014. He also regularly gives sonata recitals across Europe with pianists Eduard Kutrowatz and Alejandro Picó Leonís.
