Erwin Steinhauer studied history as well as German language and literature. In 1974, he co-founded the cabaret group Keif with Erich Demmer and was active as a political cabaret artist on Austrian and German stages until 1992, performing from Kabarett Simpl to Düsseldorfer Kom(m)ödchen.
Since 1982, he has performed at the Burgtheater, followed by engagements at the Theater in der Josefstadt, Volkstheater, Volksoper, Theater der Courage, and guest appearances at the Berliner Ensemble.
Since 2010, he has toured Austria with his band Steinhauer und Die Lieben, dedicating himself to music and literature. His current programme For your sake features evergreens by Ralph Benatzky and Hermann Leopoldi in new arrangements.
From 2022 to 2024, together with Andrej Serkov, he presented three Joseph Roth evenings: Der Leviathan, Der Vorzugsschüler, and Die Büste des Kaisers. In 2023, he explored the secret of the pen-pal relationship between Marlene Dietrich and Friedrich Torberg in the programme Write. No, don’t write.
In autumn 2023, he appeared in the world premiere of Bis nächsten Freitag by Peter Turrini at the Theater in der Josefstadt. In 2024, he performed in Karl Kraus’ Die letzten Tage der Menschheit at the Salzburg Festival and at the Wiener Konzerthaus.
