Austrian cellist Valerie Fritz explores her instrument from electronics to gut strings, in both contemporary and classical music. She approaches works and audiences with equal openness and attention to detail. With her broad repertoire, she proves - often in her own concert programmes and new performance formats - how much all styles benefit from thinking outside the box. Valerie Fritz can be heard as a soloist and in chamber music ensembles at festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, Klangspuren Schwaz, the Schumann Festival at the Tonhalle Düsseldorf and listening closely. She develops her repertoire in direct dialogue with composers such as Helmut Lachenmann, Thomas Larcher and Georg Friedrich Haas. In the 2025/26 season, she will be performing in European concert halls as an ECHO Rising Star. She is part of the NAMES ensemble - winner of the Ernst von Siemens Ensemble Prize - and plays regularly with the Camerata Salzburg. ‘I'm not someone who thinks extremely technically,’ says the cellist, describing her approach to contemporary and classical works. ‘The most important thing is always my own idea of sound, from which I start my search on the instrument in order to do it justice.’
