
Vienna-based Latvian alto Helēna Sorokina specializes in contemporary vocal music and performance, concert singing, and chanson. Since 2020, she has been developing and presenting VOICE.ONLY, an innovative contemporary concert series and a parallel research project at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. The project explores the many facets, techniques, and notational forms of the contemporary singing voice. A central and award-winning part of this work is Shades of Solitude, a cycle of over 50 newly composed unaccompanied solo works written for and premiered by her.
Since 2022, she has held the position of University Assistant at the Center for Artistic Research at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. Helēna Sorokina has been the alto of the renowned vocal ensemble for early and contemporary music, Cantando Admont, since 2017.
Her performances and lecture appearances have taken her to leading international venues and festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, Teatro Colón Buenos Aires, Wiener Konzerthaus, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Kölner Philharmonie, Onassis Center in Athens, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Wien Modern, Vilnius 700, Klangspuren Schwaz, UC Berkeley, Yale-NUS College Singapore, New York University, CalArts, and UC Davis.
In 2025, she will appear at the Salzburg Festival, Zurich Opera, Eclat Festival Stuttgart, Wien Modern, and Skaņu Mežs in Riga, among others.
