Artist Website

For over two decades, Franz Welser-Möst has shaped an unmistakable sound culture as Music Director of The Cleveland Orchestra. Now in his 23rd season, he has led the ensemble to international acclaim, with critics consistently praising its exceptional musical quality. Through innovative programming and strategic collaborations, the orchestra has also succeeded in cultivating one of the youngest audiences in the United States.

Under Welser-Möst’s leadership, The Cleveland Orchestra has reaffirmed its strong commitment to contemporary music and reintroduced staged opera productions at Severance Music Center. In addition to orchestral residencies across the United States, Europe, and China, he and the orchestra are regular guests at major international festivals. His tenure, which runs through 2027, marks the longest in the orchestra’s history.

As a guest conductor, Franz Welser-Möst maintains a particularly close and fruitful artistic partnership with the Vienna Philharmonic. He appears regularly in their subscription concerts at the Musikverein Wien and on tours throughout Europe, Japan, China, and the United States. Together, they have also performed at historic memorial concerts in Sarajevo and Versailles. Welser-Möst has conducted the Vienna Philharmonic’s internationally celebrated New Year’s Concert on three occasions (2011, 2013, 2023). The 2023 concert was widely hailed by critics and audiences alike as one of the finest in the event’s history.

At the Salzburg Festival, Franz Welser-Möst has set new benchmarks in operatic interpretation, with productions such as Rusalka, Fidelio, Aribert Reimann’s Lear, and Puccini’s Il trittico. His focus on the operas of Richard Strauss has resulted in acclaimed performances of Der Rosenkavalier, Die Liebe der Danae, and Salome — the latter a landmark production that made festival history in 2018. On the 100th anniversary of the Salzburg Festival, he conducted Elektra in both 2020 and 2021. In the upcoming season, he will return to the Wiener Staatsoper for a new production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.

From 2010 to 2014, Welser-Möst served as General Music Director of the Wiener Staatsoper, where he championed a broad repertoire while placing special emphasis on 20th-century opera, with a particular artistic focus on the works of Leoš Janáček.

Franz Welser-Möst has received numerous distinctions and awards. He is an Honorary Member of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna and has received the Vienna Philharmonic’s Honorary Ring, the Kilenyi Medal of the Bruckner Society of America, and the Kennedy Center Gold Medal in the Arts. In 2020, he was awarded the Salzburg Festival Pin with Ruby, and in 2021 he received the Austrian Music Theatre Prize for Elektra in the category of Best Musical Direction.

His latest book, Als ich die Stille fand. Ein Plädoyer gegen den Lärm der Welt, published in 2020, became an instant No. 1 bestseller in Austria. It was later translated and released in English as From Silence: Finding Calm in a Dissonant World (2021).

Franz Welser-Möst has an extensive discography of CD and DVD recordings, many of which have received international accolades. In 2020, The Cleveland Orchestra launched its own streaming platform, adella.live, through which recordings from Severance Hall are available as streams, downloads, and on CD.
