Anna Bernreitner studied music theatre direction at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. In 2011, she founded the artist collective OPER RUND UM, which has since been dedicated to staging opera productions in unusual locations. For her work with OPER RUND UM, Bernreitner received the Cultural Recognition Award of the Province of Lower Austria in 2017, as well as the Austrian Music Theatre Prize in 2019. In recent years, she has directed performances in public spaces, at unconventional venues, and in traditional opera houses. In 2021, her production of Wolfgang Rihm’s Proserpina premiered with Neue Oper Wien. This direction was awarded the Götz Friedrich Prize. Most recently, she has worked with Landestheater Innsbruck, Theater Magdeburg, and the Opéra national de Lorraine. For Theater St. Gallen, Bernreitner staged The Fairy Queen as an open-air spectacle at an altitude of 1,400 meters in the Swiss Alps. As part of the Strauss Festival 2025 and the Wir.sind.Wien.Festival, she will present Indigo and the 23 Robbers in all 23 districts of Vienna in public spaces. In the 2025/2026 season, she will also make her directorial debut at the Zurich Opera House.
