Andreja Zidaric

Andreja Zidaric is an award-winning Slovenian soprano who is active in the genres of opera, operetta and musicals.

The singer, who was described in Die Opernwelt 12/2023 as “ ... even excellently cast in the most popular roles: Andreja Zidaric does not give the Queen of the Night as a coloratrice on duty, but tells hauntingly and lyrically clearly of her fate ...”, has already been able to work with numerous renowned personalities from the world of music and theater, including Josef E. Köpplinger, Franz Welser-Möst, Stephen Schwartz, Sir Trevor Nunn or Harry Kupfer, as well as with the Tonkünstler Orchestra, Munich Symphony Orchestra or Vienna Opera Ball Orchestra.

Andreja Zidaric was the first Slovenian soprano to sing at the Salzburg Festival in 2014 as part of the Young Singers Project.

At the 7th International Heinrich Strecker Singing Competition in Baden near Vienna, the up-and-coming singer won first prize from the jury, the audience prize and the special prize - participation in the Salzburg Festival's Young Singers Project.

She has also been a finalist and semi-finalist in other prestigious competitions, including the Emmerich Smola “SWR Young Opera Stars” prize, the Otto Edelmann Singing Competition and the Lotte Lenya Singing Competition.

Andreja Zidaric attaches equal importance to precision and attention to detail as well as to passionately embodying her roles. Markus Thiel wrote about her portrayal of Anna Reich “ ... While Andreja Zidaric provides the magic moment of the evening in her Anna aria. ...“ and the Neue Musikzeitung: ‘ ... Andreja Zidaric's equally appealingly youthful Anna then succeeded in charging the flowing lines with so much girlish fire and sweetly hopeful devotion in her ’Wohl denn, gefasst ist der Entschluss” that this scene became the musical-dramatic and finally emotionally convincing climax of Act 3. ...”

The singer's important roles to date include Queen of the Night in “The Magic Flute”, Olympia in “The Tales of Hoffmann”, Adele in “Die Fledermaus”, Cunegonde in “Candide”, Gretel in “Hansel and Gretel”, Pamina in “The Magic Flute”, Anna Reich in “Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor”, Monika in “Das Medium”, Fedora in “Die Zirkusprinzessin”, Friederike in “Friederike” and Maria in “West Side Story” as well as Violanta in the world premiere of “Die Schattenkaiserin”.

Trained at the Music and Arts University of Vienna, formerly the Conservatory of the City of Vienna, she completed the solo singing department in the class of Uta Schwabe and before that the musical entertainment theater department, where she was taught by Michèle Friedman. This also explains the great versatility of Andreja Zidaric, who can switch between the genres of opera, operetta and musical. Master classes with Thomas Hampson, Adrian Eröd and Pasek and Paul expanded her training. She received additional coaching from Patricia Nessy, a soloist at the Vienna Volksoper, among others.

She has been coached by Monika Rebholz since 2023.

After engagements on major stages such as the Seefestspiele Mörbisch, the Tiroler Landestheater, the Raimund Theater Vienna and the stages of the Salzburg Festival, Andreja Zidaric received a permanent contract at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz Munich in 2020 and made her house debut with the role of Ottilie in Benatzky's “Im Weißen Rössl”. This was followed by two premieres, which were streamed live due to the Covid-19 pandemic: Menotti's “Das Medium” and the world premiere of “Schubert's Journey to Atzenbrugg”. She celebrated further premiere successes with her portrayals of Olympia (The Tales of Hoffman), Adele (Die Fledermaus), Queen of the Night (The Magic Flute), Anna Reich (The Merry Wives of Windsor), Sophie (Werther), Sleeping Beauty and Friederike.

She made her debut in 2022/2023 with the orchestra Die Tonkünstler in Vienna in the Golden Hall of the Musikverein under the musical direction of Alfred Eschwe and Lorenz Aichner.

Attractive roles await the successful soprano in the coming season: Morgana in Handel's Alcina, Adina in Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore (study assignment), the title role Maske in Blau in Reymond's operetta Maske in Blau and Freda in J. Strauss' operetta Der Waldmeister.

To conclude, a quote from the prominent Slovenian radio presenter Bor Greiner: “There's no accounting for taste, but Andreja Zidaric is simply unbelievably good!”
