EsRap

Through their recent releases and live performances, EsRAP have become a leading example of Austrian resistant pop art with a migrant background, drawing considerable media attention in the process.

Siblings Esra and Enes Özmen, who grew up in Vienna’s traditional working-class district of Ottakring, discovered hip hop as the ideal medium to amplify their voices and earn recognition for their perspective and its inherent tensions. Together they form the duo EsRAP, and their lyrics — blending German and Turkish — explore themes of identity, feeling foreign in their own country as third-generation immigrants, the necessity of rebellion rooted in lived experience, rap as a form of resistance, and being a woman in a male-dominated hip hop scene. Contrary to the genre’s typical role distribution, Esra delivers sharp, fast-paced rhymes while her brother Enes contributes melodic vocals with his distinctive, emotive tone.

Musically, EsRAP draw inspiration from the Turkish genre of arabesque, which they fuse with contemporary beats. After releasing numerous tracks via digital platforms, their debut album Tschuschistan was released in June 2019 on the Berlin label Springstoff. The siblings later joined forces with the high-energy band Gasmac Gilmore, whose presence has added intensity to their live shows and expanded their sound toward a dynamic blend of Balkan influences with a spaghetti western flair — first evident in their anthem Freunde dabei.

In July 2022, EsRAP released their second album Mamafih, once again on Springstoff, produced entirely by prolific beatmaker TESTA. September 2023 saw the release of ...weil sie Wien nicht kennen, their first collaborative album with Gasmac Gilmore, which premiered to a sold-out crowd at the Wiener Konzerthaus.

Live, EsRAP present a curated selection from their growing body of work — infused with charm, Ottakring wit, and a direct connection to their audience.
