Frans Poelstra

Artistic Consultation

Frans Poelstra graduated from the SNDO in Amsterdam in 1984. During the 1980s and 1990s, he participated in numerous music and dance improvisation performances with artists such as David Zambrano, Sasha Waltz, Mark Tompkins, Vera Mantero, Katie Duck, Benoît Lachambre, Jennifer Lacey, and Steve Paxton.

In 2003, he began a long-term collaboration with performer and writer Robert Steijn, with whom he founded the duo united sorry. A year later, he moved to Vienna, where he continues to live and work.

In addition to his solo performances, Poelstra collaborates with local artists including Krõõt Juurak, Elizabeth Ward, Michikazu Matsune, Alix Eynaudi, and Vera Rosner (MixedAbilityDance), among others. Most recently, he has worked with Oleg Soulimenko; their joint production The Feeling of Home premiered at Residenz/Schauspielhaus Leipzig in February 2023.

Poelstra has taught workshops at numerous institutions across Europe, including SNDO Amsterdam, EDDC Arnhem, ImPulsTanz, Tanzquartier Wien, SEAD Salzburg, CNDC Angers, ICI Montpellier, HZT Berlin, Tanzfabrik Berlin, and the Theatre Academy Helsinki.

“Since I’ve been part of the Mellow Yellow project, inclusion has become a major theme in my life. I’m a cis-man, and through this work, my own privilege became very apparent. Mellow Yellow is not only a mixed-ability art project for schools, but also an ongoing research initiative.

We constantly ask ourselves questions: What can we, as Mellow Yellow, do to contribute to a society in which inclusion is no longer a topic of discussion, but a given? How can we support people with non-visible or unrecognised disabilities, whose everyday challenges are often overlooked?

Beyond these reflections, I believe Mellow Yellow is a clear, powerful, and important project with the potential to become a leading voice for inclusion in Austria.”
