Merlin Ensemble Vienna

The chamber music repertoire of the Merlin Ensemble spans various formations and unusual arrangements—from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Mozart’s Lodron Night Music to Schoenberg’s Transfigured Night. The Merlin Ensemble Vienna has also earned recognition for its work in contemporary chamber music, as demonstrated by collaborations with composers such as Sofia Gubaidulina, Friedrich Cerha, and Christian Muthspiel.

Performances at venues such as the Musikverein and Konzerthaus in Vienna, the Burgtheater and the Arnold Schoenberg Center, the Stephaniensaal in Graz, and with presenters such as Teatro La Fenice, Teatro Comunale Bologna, Ferrara Musica, Leipzig Opera, NDR Hannover, Schauspielhaus Hamburg, Brucknerhaus Linz, Berliner Ensemble, Paul Klee Museum in Bern, Gare du Nord Basel, Zagreb Philharmonic, the Austrian Cultural Forums in New York and Washington, and the Morgan Library in New York have cemented the ensemble’s international reputation.

The Merlin Ensemble Vienna is also a regular guest at festivals such as the Salzburg Festival, Lucerne Festival, Ittingen Whitsun Concerts, Beethovenfest Bonn, Schubertiade Feldkirch, Festival Retz, Grafenegg, Allegro Vivo Festival, Carinthian Summer, Musikfest Bremen, Wiesbaden May Festival, Ludwigsburg Palace Festival, Gmunden Festival Weeks, and Musikverein Graz. The ensemble also frequently performs in the grand broadcasting hall of the ORF Funkhaus, where it has produced numerous CDs for the ORF label. Since 2015, the Merlin Ensemble Vienna has been the “Ensemble in Residence” at the International May Festival in Wiesbaden.

Through collaborations with actors such as Ulrich Matthes, Peter Matic, Martin Schwab, Lore Brunner, Manfred Karge, Andrea Eckert, Johanna Wokalek, Karl Markovics, and Sylvie Rohrer—especially with Hermann Beil—the ensemble has developed major music-theatrical projects.

These projects, staged by Hermann Beil, are performed throughout Europe, including Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire with Sylvie Rohrer and Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale in versions with Manfred Karge and Karl Markovics.

Since 2019, the Merlin Ensemble Vienna has been presenting a widely acclaimed climate change project together with HARALD LESCH (Lesch’s Cosmos) entitled Harald Lesch and the Four Seasons in the Age of Climate Change. This project has been performed at the Ludwigsburg Palace Festival, the Kronberg Academy, Theater im Park in Vienna, and numerous other venues.
