
Born in Vienna, Michael Grohotolsky began his musical career as an alto soloist with the Wiener Sängerknaben. He studied music and vocal pedagogy and has been a senior lecturer in conducting, ensemble and instrumental conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna since 2006.
Michael Grohotolsky has been artistic director of the Vienna Chamber Choir since 2007. From 2000 to 2007, he was artistic director of the Chorus Viennensis, the male choir of the former Wiener Sängerknaben. He also held the position of choir director at the Neue Oper Wien from 2001 to 2018 and was artistic director of the Vienna State Youth Choir from 2009 to 2016. From then on, Grohotolsky founded and directed the
Vienna Youth Choir Academy in 2016. From 2009 to 2023, he directed the youth choir of the Vienna Choir School at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. From September 2017 to September 2019, he was artistic director of the Chorus Juventus, the senior choir of the Wiener Sängerknaben.
As part of his musical career to date, he has conducted choral and orchestral works with renowned orchestras such as the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonic Orchestra, Les Talens Lyrique (Christoph Rousset) and the L'Orfeo Baroque Orchestra. In 2022, Grohotolsky was invited as a guest conductor as part of a high mass in the Vienna Court Music Chapel (consisting of the Vienna Boys' Choir, members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera Chorus).
In addition to his work as a conductor and choirmaster, he is a sought-after guest lecturer, workshop leader and jury member at various choral competitions in Austria and abroad.
He is the recipient of the Erwin Ortner Fund's prize for young choral conductors.
