Nikolaus Habjan graduated with honors in music theater directing from the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. At the same time, he learned to play with folding puppets with Neville Tranter, which he has used in numerous productions, such as F. Zawrel - erbbiologisch und sozial minderwertig (Nestroy Prize), and has worked as a freelance director at various theaters in Austria and abroad. He was director in residence at the Theater an der Wien (Oberon, Faust, Salome and La Perichole and Wo die wilden Kerle wohnen) and in-house director at the Dortmund Opera (Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Tosca, Die Zauberflöte, Das Geheimnis der Zauberflöte, a version for children and Orpheus in der Unterwelt). At the Theater Basel he staged Il Barbiere, at the Semperoper Dresden L`Orfeo and in 2024 The Magic Flute in Cleveland with Franz Welser-Möst.
In addition to his work behind the scenes, he can often be seen on stage, both as a puppeteer and as an artistic piper.
