Paul Grilj studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and is a lighting designer, lighting technician, composer and musician.
From 2005 to 2015, he was lighting designer and lighting technician at the Schauspielhaus Graz, and from 2015 to 2022, he was head of the lighting/video department at the Vienna Volkstheater.
Since 2022, he has been working internationally as a freelancer. In addition to numerous projects at these two theatres, Paul Grilj has also worked at the Staatsoper Berlin Unter den Linden, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Severance Hall Cleveland, the Thalia Theater Hamburg, the Bregenz Festival, the Aalto Theater Essen, the Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf, the Opera National de Lorrain, the Schaubühne Berlin, the Berliner Ensemble, the Salzburg Festival, the Margarethen Quarry, the SWR Festival, the Stuttgart State Theatre, the Graz Opera, the Nuremberg State Theatre, the Magdeburg Theatre, the St. Gallen Theatre, the Stuttgart State Opera, the Theater an der Wien, the Yauza Palace Moscow...
