Judit Varga


Born in Hungary, Judit Varga is a Vienna-based composer of classical music, film composer, pianist, and university professor. She collaborates with renowned orchestras and ensembles from around the world, including Ensemble Modern, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Kontrapunkte, and the Riot Ensemble London.

She has composed music for over 30 theatre productions and films. In 2013, 2014, and 2020, she was nominated by the Austrian Film Academy in the Best Film Score category. Her films have been shown at major international A-list festivals.

In 2016, the Hungarian State Opera commissioned and premiered her opera Love in Budapest to great acclaim. For her outstanding contributions to contemporary Hungarian music and the cultural life of Hungary, she was awarded the Béla Bartók – Ditta Pásztory Prize in 2017.

In 2022, Varga received the Outstanding Artist Award for her achievements in the field of music from the Austrian Federal Ministry for Arts and Culture.

Since 2019, she has been a university professor for composition and media composition at the mdw – University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
