Enrique Mendoza, originally from Mexico City, is an electroacoustic music artist with a focus on live electronics. His work explores the boundaries of electroacoustic composition and performance through the use of DIY analog oscillators, lo-fi mini-synths, custom software, and contemporary music production technologies. He collaborates closely with instrumentalists to push artistic boundaries and gain insight into both the instruments and each performer’s unique expressivity.
Mendoza studied compositional techniques at CIEM Academy, with a licentiate degree endorsed by Trinity College London. In 2010, he completed a Master’s degree in Composition for Film at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
His debut electroacoustic album Below Sea Level was released in January 2014 on Future Music Records in London. His piece Cassiopeia, for saxophone and live electronics, was nominated as Best Instrumental Song at the 2016 Independent Music Awards in New York. In 2017 and 2019, he was selected as Composer in Residence for the KulturKontakt Austria and AIR–Niederösterreich programmes, in cooperation with the Federal Chancellery of Austria.
He has received commissions from organisations and ensembles such as Fonds Podium Kunsten (Netherlands), Reconsil Ensemble (Austria), Melisma Saxophone Quartet (Netherlands), Tamhá Trio (Spain), The Black Page Orchestra (Austria), Zoom Trio (Denmark), Platypus Ensemble (Austria), Jos Zwaanenburg (Netherlands), Boglárka Nagy (Hungary), and Visiones Sonoras (Mexico).
His works have been performed by renowned artists and ensembles including Jos Zwaanenburg, Johan van der Linden, Zoom Trio, Melisma Saxophone Quartet, Reconsil Ensemble, The Black Page Orchestra, Tamhá Trio, Mexico City Wind Quintet, Het Trio, Ossia Ensemble, Avlitria Ensemble, Platypus Ensemble, and Boglárka Nagy. His music has been featured at numerous international events and festivals, including IGNM Strommusik in Vienna, Ny Musik Festival in Denmark, the 40th International Computer Music Conference (ICMC/SMC 2014) in Greece, Unsafe&Sound Festival in Vienna, Tromp Percussion Eindhoven, the 3rd International Forum for Young Composers with the Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble in Portugal, Amsterdam Blockflute Festival, Miradas de Música Contemporánea in Pamplona, and the Contemporary Music Festival of Navarra in Spain, among many others.
Mendoza is the recipient of several awards, including the Tribune of Mexican Music (2004, 2012), the Composition Contest of Michoacán, and the Tribune of Latin American and Caribbean Music (2004). He represented Mexico at the 51st International Rostrum of Composers at UNESCO in Paris, and in 2012, he was selected by the Mexican Music Council to represent the country at the 59th International Rostrum of Composers, organised by the International Music Council in Stockholm.
In addition to his concert work, Enrique has composed for film and live cinema. Productions he has contributed to have been screened at over 15 international film festivals across France, the Netherlands, Greece, Italy, Croatia, Mexico, and the United States. The film Mamuth, on which he collaborated, was nominated for the Ariel Award.
