An enchanting cello sound and Ivan Turkalj belong together like heaven and earth. He conjures a sonic cosmos that is deeply rooted, yet ventures boldly and resolutely into wide-open spaces. At the heart of his artistry lies an irrepressible desire for discovery. Ivan Turkalj has long embodied the much sought-after “reinvention” of classical music.
He has been described as “an exemplary example of artists on the independent scene who combine creative music-making with social responsibility.” The following year, he was awarded the Music Prize of the Universitätsbund Würzburg. In 2024, his album What The Fugue was nominated for the German Record Prize in the “Grenzgänger” (crossover) category. His first solo album will be released in 2025.
Ivan Turkalj studied in Vienna, Würzburg, and Zurich, and performs across Europe as a soloist, with The Erlkings, and with the New Piano Trio.
