2025 is Johann Strauss’ bicentenary. To mark the occasion, the city of Vienna has devised a wide-ranging cultural programme presenting 65 productions and 3 exhibitions at 71 different locations in the city. They range from classical concerts to non-classical performances, operetta to spoken theatre, dance to circus, installations to exhibitions, cinema to scholarship. The events come under three main headings:
These events revolve around Strauss‘ original scores. They showcase his unrivalled orchestration and the captivating melodies that have lost none of their enchantment for music-lovers all over the world.
These events take up topics associated with Strauss’s music and his life and make something new out of them. They distil, process and recast familiar material. The results are unexpected, to say the least.
These events transport Strauss’ music into entirely new dimensions. The idea is to provide electrifying entertainment for audiences at locations that have nothing in common with customary theatre and concert venues. Like Strauss, they’ll be right there at the cutting edge.
